Private Services For Kenneth Schweiger

Kenneth E. Schweiger, 90, of Whippany, formerly of Livingston, died on Monday, September 22. Services were private. Born in Brooklyn, he served in the US Navy during World War II. He later became a member of the Whippany Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as a Post Commander. After attending Princeton, Mr. Schweiger later became director of industrial relations for the National Association of Manufacturers. He later served in the same capacity with Singer Corporation and finally for his own firm, Management Consultants. Predeceased by his wife, Marguerite (Lea), Mr. Schweiger is survived by his daughters: Janet Kerr and her husband, Thomas; Dorothy Sobieski and her husband, Kenneth; Lea Bumber and her husband, Edward; and Carol Thompson. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. The family has suggested that memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.

LHS Girls' Volleyball Team Event Supports Breast Cancer Awareness

When it comes to high school girls' volleyball, the Mount Saint Dominic Lions and the Livingston Lancers are fierce competitors on the court. Off the court, however, they are teaming up to support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization and breast cancer awareness with their Pink Event. The fund-raiser will held on Saturday, October 11, in the Livingston High School gym. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure in North New Jersey Foundation.

Annual Fire Department Open House to Be Held on Sunday, October 5

The Fire Department’s annual Open House will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 1 to 5 p.m. at headquarters station on South Livingston Avenue. This year’s Fire Safety campaign focuses on "Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month" to keep families safe from fire dangers. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.

School Board Candidates Discuss Reasons for Seeking Election

In an effort to help the community compare the two candidates, Buddy August and Barry Funt, for the one full term on the Board of Education, which will be decided in the November 4 election, the West Essex Tribune, with the help of the League of Women Voters, has posed a series of four questions to the candidates. A one year term and a two year term will be filled by Ronnie Konner and Ron Spring, respectively. Both are running unopposed and will make statements in the week before the election.

LHS Tennis Team Splits Week's Matches

The Lady Lancer tennis team won two and lost two matches in county and regular season play this week. Livingston defeated Cedar Grove in the Essex County Tournament before losing to Glen Ridge in the county quarterfinals. The team defeated Caldwell in a Super Essex Conference match before losing to Mt. St. Dominic in a regular season match. Livingston has a 3-8 win-loss record, 1-3 in the conference.

League of Women Voters Holds Town Council Candidates’ Forum

The seven candidates for three seats on the Livingston Township Council spoke at the annual Livingston League of Women Voters (LWV) Candidates' Night on September 17. The audience filled the Livingston High School Chorus Room, and the evening was recorded by L-TV. The seven candidates – three Democrats, three Republicans, and one Independent, spoke about themselves, their candidacies and qualifications, and answered questions at the forum. The election will take place on November 4.

Hold School Board Candidates' Night

The Livingston League of Women Voters (LWV) will hold its second Candidates Night, for Board of Education candidates, on Thursday evening, October 2, from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Livingston High School chorus room. Ronnie Konner and Ron Spring, who will be filling two unexpired terms with no opposition, will begin the evening with statements, then join the audience. Since they are each running unopposed, they will not be joining the debate.

The Livingston High School girls' volleyball team increased its record to 8-0 with a win over a strong Verona team. The Lancers also had an impressive win over Montclair Kimberley Academy; however, the real story of the week was about the Livingston Invitational.

Livingston Spinners Cycle in Times Square

Cycle for Survival kicked off its 2015 campaign with a successful Times Square Takeover. Seven hundred spinners danced and sang on their stationary bikes throughout the day as they listened to the inspirational words of cancer survivors, doctors, celebrities, and co-founder of Cycle for Survival, Dave Linn. Linn is the husband of Livingston native, Jennifer Goodman Linn, who initiated the event before losing her battle with cancer in 2011.

Lancer Football Team Crushes Kearny Cardinals

The Livingston Lancers varsity football team overwhelmed the Kearny Cardinals, 47-0, for their second win of the season. Playing at home on Friday, September 19, head coach Barry Kostibos characterized the shut-out as a “great win where we responded well in all three phases of the game coming off a hard fought victory against Millburn.”
