Dear Editor:This past Thursday, July 27, the veteran posts of Livingston commemorated the signing of the armistice to cease fighting during the Korean War. There was an excellent turnout even though the venue was changed to escape the heat. The town library was gracious to provide us space.The story of Hector Cafferata was told. Chinese soldiers attacked his position. He fired at them for seven hours in below-zero temperatures near the Chosin reservoir, killing over 100. He was awarded the Medal of Honor and asked authorities to mail it to him. President Truman insisted on a formal presentation. Hector was a member of the Livingston VFW. American Legion and VFW member, Chris Birardi told the story of the other brave Marines who fought in Korea. The highlight of the event was when VFW member Jeff Smith, with the help of his daughter Jill, read two letters he sent home to his parents while he served in Korea.
