LFD Responds to Calls of Odd Odors

The Livingston Fire Department (LFD) responded to a number of calls this week, most of which were reports of suspicious odors and false alarms.OdorsOn Tuesday, March 26, LFD received a call reporting a strange odor on the second floor hallway of 159 Sycamore Avenue. The area was checked with a meter and nothing was found. PSE&G was notified and responded. They were unable to determine the source of the odor. The homeowners were notified.Another strange odor was reported on Thursday, March 2 8. The residents at 10 Winans Roadreported a burning odor coming from their home. The department used a meter, but nothing was found. The odor was eventually traced to a burned pot handle.Also on March 28, a burning odor was reported in the first floor hallway at 315 East Northfield Road. The smell was a result of burned food.Carbon Monoxide AlarmsOn Wednesday, March27, a carbon monoxide transmission went off at 43 Franklin Avenue. Dead batteries in the alarm caused it to be activated. The homeowner was notified.Fire AlarmsA fire alarm was activated at 114 West Mt. Pleasant Avenue on Wednesday, March 27. The system was activated as a result of the shorted out alarm system. It was reset prior to the fire department’s arrival.Last Thursday, March 28, had multiple instances of fire alarms being activated. Three of the activations were due to different contractors working within the buildings.The residence of 13 Shadowlawn Drive’s fire alarm transmission went off last Thursday due to a contractor working on the premises.There was a contractor working on the alarm system at Nero’s Grille, who caused the fire alarm transmission to be activated.The third and final contractor was working at the Staples store at 509 West Mt. Pleasant Avenue. The contractor was testing the alarm systems and caused both the fire alarm and the sprinkler system to be activated.A fire alarm went off at Trinity Church last Thursday due to a system malfunction. The system was reset prior to the arrival of LFD. On Tuesday, April 2, the fire alarm transmission at 5 Brandon Drive was activated because of steam coming from a hot shower.
