Breaking News: Arrests in Tevlin Murder

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray along with Newark Police Director Eugene Venable and West Orange Chief of Police James P. Abbott have announced that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the June 25 murder of 19-year-old Brendan Tevlin of Livingston.

A registered sex offender and a suspect in two Seattle homicides, Ali Muhammad Brown, 29, of Seattle, Washington, has been charged with murder, felony murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Also charged in connection with the Tevlin murder are Jeremy Villagran, 19, and Eric Williams, 18, both of West Orange. Both men have been charged with felony murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Fire Chief Chris Mullin commended a neighbor, whose quick actions reduced the damage from a fi re at 24 Yorktown Terrace, the home of Gemma McSweeney, on Wednesday, July 23.

Library Has New director

The Livingston Public Library has announced that its new director, Amy Babcock Landry, will take over the helm effective August 4. Landry will replace Judith Kron, who retired as the library's director in December. Serving as interim directors since that time have been Amy Hyfler and Rita Hilbert.

Emergency Squads Check Report of Possible bomb

The Livingston Police and Fire Departments investigated a suspected pressure cooker bomb that fortunately turned out to be a false alarm on Monday afternoon, July 21. A passer-by called police at about 2:30 p.m. to report the presence of an unattended, lidded pressure cooker left in the parking lot of the Toys R Us store at 599 West Mt. Pleasant Avenue. The Essex County Bomb Squad also responded to the scene.

Hillside-Northfield Partners, L.L.C. is constructing an 80-unit residential apartment complex on the former site of DuBrow's Nursery, 251 West Northfield Road. Twenty percent of the units on the 4.5 acre parcel of land will be reserved for low and moderate income housing as part of the Township's "Mount Laurel" obligation; the rest will be available at market value. The complex will include four separate buildings with 20 units each; a clubhouse; and a pool.

Summer Concert Series Concludes With Springsteen Tribute band

Livingston's 2014 Summer Concert Series, sponsored by Regal Bank, will conclude this Sunday, July 27, with a performance by the B-Street Band, a Bruce Springsteen tribute band. The concert will take place at the gazebo in Memorial Park from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free. Residents should take chairs or blankets for seating, and picnics are encouraged. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held in the Livingston High School auditorium.

Livingston High School Students Place Well At National Future Business Leaders Conference

Livingston High School students placed fi rst and second in the nation in the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference, held in Nashville, Tennessee. LHS sent 12 FBLA students to the conference with advisers Alanna Seid and Colleen Cornell. More than 10,200 students competed.
