Volunteer firefighters have busy week; extinguish fire and respond to 24 Calls

Livingston's volunteer firefighters were busy this week, with 24 calls from July 8 through 14. The only general alarm was reported on Monday, July 14, when a fire alarm transmission was received from 4 Tulip Court, the home of Jeffrey Hare. No one from the Hare family was at home; however, the alarm system alerted offi cials of a problem.

August to Run For School Board

Former township councilman Charles "Buddy" August has announced plans to run for a three year term on the Livingston Board of Education in November. August, who served four terms on the Board of Education starting in 1985, will challenge incumbent Barry Funt, who has already announced that he will seek a second, three year term on the Board.

Approve Subdivisions At Workshop Meeting

Once a month the Planning Board meets in a workshop forum to finalize and approve pending applications and to concentrate on important issues for the future. On Tuesday evening, the Board approved two minor subdivisions. The property at 161-163 South Livingston Avenue, that houses Rowma Custom Tailor, was granted a minor façade change for its awning; and Lithos Restaurant at 405 Eisenhower Parkway received approval to increase its outdoor seating from a previously approved plan for its outside patio.

July 4 Fireworks

The evening entertainment for the Independence Day celebration included a performance by "Livingston Leo," also known as Len Meranus; the singing of the National Anthem by Dena Sweeney; and, of course, the spectacular annual fireworks display. Firefighters Respond to MVA and Numerous Storm Calls

Livingston's volunteer firefighters were kept busy this past week responding to motor vehicle accidents and storm-related calls. On Wednesday, July 2, fire officials responded to the intersection of Cliffside and Bryant Drives on a report that a repairman working on a garbage truck had become trapped beneath it.

Students and Adults Learn Food Preparation

High school and young adult students at the Children’s Institute (TCI) in Livingston are learning all about food preparation, nutrition, cooking and baking with an expanded culinary program and new chef. The culinary program is one of many programs for students at TCI, which has schools in Livingston and Verona for children and young adults ages three to 21 on the autism spectrum and with related disabilities.

Council to Approve Implementing New Pool Membership Categories

Two new categories of pool membership were proposed to the Township Council during its Monday evening conference meeting. The proposals were made by the Vision 20/20 Committee's Recreation and Parks subcommittee. According to the subcommittee's report, pool membership numbers have declined again this year. Early bird memberships were down by 76 members, which is more than five per cent.

Funeral Held For Livingston Teen Gunned Down in West Orange

More than 1,000 people crowded into St. Philomena's Church on Tuesday, July 1, to mourn the death of 19 year old Brendan Tevlin, who was gunned down in West Orange on Wednesday evening, June 25. Tevlin, a graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School and a rising sophomore at the University of Richmond, had been at a friend's house in West Orange playing video games. He apparently texted his mother that he was on his way home; however, he never made it.
