Thomas Mark Long, loving husband, father and grandfather, died at home of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) on June 5, 2023. He was 70.
Tom was an admirable man known for his kindness, fine intellect, generous spirit and love for his family. He will be loved forever.
Tom was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. He graduated from Rutgers University, Newark, where he met his wife, Kathleen. They were married in 1976 and enjoyed a loving and fulfilling marriage for 47 years.
After college, Tom attended New York Law School, earning a J.D., and decided to pursue a career interpreting tax law for practitioners. To deepen his knowledge, he earned an L.L.M. in Tax Law from New York University. He enjoyed a successful career as a managing tax editor for several leading tax law publishing firms, and retired from Thomson Reuters in 2019.
Tom and Kathy have called Livingston, New Jersey their hometown since 1984. He poured his loving spirit into his role as a husband to Kathy, and he found great joy as a father to Allison. Allison’s life with her husband, Karl, and children, Ryder and Evelyn, brought him much happiness. There was no bound to his devotion to them all.
Since the time they met in college, Tom and Kathy had planned to travel. Over the years, they traveled to many parts of the U.S., including our treasured State and National Parks. They walked Florida beaches and hiked New Hampshire trails. They explored Israel, Europe, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.
They purchased a sailboat and sailed the Raritan Bay. Tom was a skilled boat captain and studied navigation.
When not on the water, he enjoyed caring for their historic English colonial and gardening. He enjoyed a good book, walking the dogs in the neighborhood, and listening to Irish folk music.
Tom mastered the art of retelling old fables, fairy tales, and reciting corny jokes. He often volunteered to serve others in the community, and especially liked helping the Friends of the Livingston Library.
Tom was predeceased by his father, Joseph Long; his mother, Elizabeth; and his brother, Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; his daughter, Allison; and his grandchildren, Ryder and Evelyn. Also surviving him are his brother, Joseph Long; his sister, Elizabeth Long Hunt; and his brother, Michael Long.
