Two Newark teens are facing several charges after allegedly breaking into a home and stealing a luxury vehicle, Livingston Police said.
At 5:47 a.m. on Tuesday, July 25, Livingston officers responded to a Chelsea Drive home on a report of a burglary in progress.
The homeowner was awakened to multiple suspects with handguns inside of the residence. The suspects then allegedly stole the homeowner’s purse, as well as a 2021 Cadillac Escalade.
Upon arrival, officers located a stolen BMW leaving the scene and pursued the vehicle onto Route 280. Later, the vehicle was pursued by multiple different agencies and eventually was involved in a crash and bailout in the area of East Orange and Orange, where two suspects were apprehended.
An investigation led to Jaquil Buie, 18, and Travis Andrews, 18, both of Newark, facing charges related to the home burglary and stealing the Escalade. They were both charged with burglary, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, possession of burglar’s tools, conspiracy, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a handgun, two counts of prohibited weapons, three counts of theft and credit card theft. Buie was also charged with eluding and aggravated assault.
Both were lodged in the Essex County jail on the charges and the investigation is ongoing by the Livingston Detective Bureau.
Attempted Vehicle Theft
At 5:54 a.m. on Monday, July 31, Livingston officers responded to a Lafayette Drive home on a report of several suspects attempting to steal vehicles.
Upon arrival, officers met with the victim, who provided surveillance video showing the suspects entering the victim’s unlocked Mercedes and then exiting after not being able to steal the vehicle.
The suspects fled the scene and this incident is being investigated by the Livingston Detective Bureau.
