A windstorm on Wednesday evening, January 25, brought down primary electrical wires at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Firefighters reported and found the wires down and burning. They secured the area until Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) personnel could make repairs.

The wind also brought down a large tree branch on Vere Terrace. The branch fell into house service wires for both 100 and 102 Vere Terrace, ripping the wires from both houses. Fire Department volunteers secured the area while PSE&G responded.

Tree Down

The following day, a large pine tree fell on the northeast portion of the Livingston Public Library property, blocking sidewalk access. The Fire Department responded and notified the Department of Public Works.

Elevator Calls

The Fire Department also responded to two elevator-related calls.

A report of an elevator alarm with entrapment brought fire officials to 4000 Pointe Gate Drive on Thursday, January 26. However, upon arrival, both elevator cars were checked and no trapped occupants found.

The following day, Friday, January 27, an elevator entrapment was reported at the Cedar Street Commons, 156 East Cedar Street, Building 2. Fire officials freed one passenger who was trapped on the third floor. The elevator was shut down and management was notified to have the unit repaired.

Possible Kitchen Fire

On Monday, January 30, firefighters responded to 34 Sherbrooke Parkway on a report of a possible kitchen fire. A plumber working in the kitchen sweating pipes had ignited insulation, which was smoldering. The area was opened up and wet down. Firefighters used an imager to check for further problems. The residence was vented.

False Alarms

The Fire Department also recorded several false alarms during the past week.

Construction set off a false alarm at the Crystal Plaza catering facility at 307 West Northfield Road on Wednesday, January 25. A fire alarm that same day at 11 Yale Court was cancelled prior to firefighters’ arrival.

There were three false alarms on Thursday, January 26. A carbon monoxide (CO) alarm transmission at 18 Ross Road was investigated, but when the residence was checked with the Department’s CO meter, no readings registered. A fire alarm transmission at 17 Westmount Drive was cancelled prior to the arrival of firefighters. Construction at the commercial building at 38 South Livingston Avenue set off a false fire alarm there.

On Saturday, January 28, there was a fire alarm transmission at 2 Deal Lane, but responding fire officials found nothing amiss. Smoke from an oven set off a fire alarm at 10 Belmont Drive later that day.
