Police Department Openings

With several retirements so far this year, and more to come, the Livingston Police Department is currently accepting applications for entry-level police officer positions.

Three long-serving Livingston Police officers, Captain John Drumm, Sergeant Michael Herbert, and Officer Ralph Kolbusz, all retired from the department last month. Three more, including Captain Tom Smith, are expected to leave the department by May, as well.

Chief of Police Gary Marshuetz has said that the department plans to promote several officers into the newly open leadership positions, and make a half dozen hirings to fill out the squad. These are expected to be filled both through transfers from other agencies and new hires. It is worth noting, too, that Chief Marshuetz is hoping to add more diversity to the department. Specifically, he hopes some of the hires will be reflective of the Livingston community’s Asian and Indian populations, if the department receives qualified candidates who fit that criteria, to better reflect the community that LPD serves. We feel that this is a terrific goal to strive for, and hope that qualified candidates who fit this criteria consider applying.

Those eligible for employment as a full-time police officer must, at the time of employment, be a U.S. citizen and New Jersey resident; older than 21 and younger than 35; of mental and bodily health; able to read, write, and speak English; of good moral character and free from conviction of any crime constituting an indictable offense or any crime or offense involving moral turpitude; able to pass such written, physical, extensive personal history background, medical, and psychological examinations; hold an associate’s degree, completed 60 college credits, or two years of active military service with an honorable discharge; hold a valid New Jersey driver’s license; and otherwise meet all the requirements of N.J.S. 40A:14-122 to N.J.S. 40:14-127.

Those interested may apply for the position through the Police App at https://shorturl.at/acsJ7 and we encourage those in town looking to make a difference in the community through a fulfilling and stable career to do so. Anyone with questions may email [email protected].

LPD will conduct an entrance exam for applicants at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 25, in the Livingston High School cafeteria. The deadline to register for the exam is Monday, March 18.

In this town, we know many of our police officers by face and name, and they know us. They enforce the law, but they are also truly ingrained in the community. If that sounds like something you would like to be a part of, we strongly suggest applying.
