After he received his LCSW degree, Mr. Furst founded the Community Psychiatric Institute of East Orange in 1972 with his psychiatrist father. He served there as the executive director for 51 years, where he pioneered the concept of day treatment for psychiatric patients. Over the years he expanded the program to include substance abuse treatment.

The family received guests for Mr. Furst on Tuesday, March 12, at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston. That was followed by a funeral service and burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
