This past week, the Livingston Fire Department (LFD) responded to a number of calls, including multiple downed wires, fire alarm transmissions, and a potential gas leak.
Wires
A large tree fell across Brandon Avenue last Thursday, March 7. It took down primary wires and caused a utility pole to snap, damaging a transformer. PSE&G were on the scene to assist.
This past Monday, March 11, a large tree fell near 32 Sterling Drive. It brought down wires and primaries. The road was blocked, PSE&G was advised and immediately responded. PSE&G capped off wires and restored partial service to the area. Department of Public Works was on the scene, removing the tree, while the Livingston Police Department stood by.
Mutual Aid Request
On Sunday, March 10, LFD received a request for an engine to standby at Orange Fire Department headquarters, as their engines were working at a structural fire.
Pull Station Activation
A pull station was activated as a result of burned food on March 5 at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. The system was reset.
Water in Basement
On March 10, the LFD assisted the homeowner at 13 Byron Place with water in the basement. The firefighters brought their industrial pump to assist in removing the water. Both gas and electric were shut off.
Alarms
The fire alarm went off at 76 North Ashby Avenue on March 7. The activation was due to burned food.
A fire alarm transmission was activated at 35 Filmore Avenue on March 7, but the call was cancelled prior to the fire department’s arrival.
On March 8, a smoke detector in a second floor storage closet at 348 East Cedar Street was activated. Upon arrival, the LFD reset the system.
The LFD received a report of a carbon monoxide alarm being activated at 209 East Mt. Pleasant Avenue. Upon arrival, no alarms, reading, or illnesses were found. PSE&G arrived on the scene and performed a safety check on the furnace per the homeowner’s request.
Runaway Boilers
On March 7, PSE&G reported a runaway boiler at 18 Deerfield Road. This is an overheated condition when a unit reaches exceedingly high pressure and temperature but will not shut off. Upon arriving at the scene, LFD was advised by the homeowner that there was an issue with his thermostat and not the boiler. The homeowner was awaiting PSE&G’s arrival and no action was taken by the LFD.
Smoky Conditions
There was a report of smoky conditions in the basement of 5 Scarsdale Drive on March 4. The LFD found a slight haze in one of the rooms and discovered a blower motor for a fan had seized. Power to the unit was turned off and the homeowner was advised to have the unit serviced.
Odors
A burning odor from the laundry room of 21 Garnet Terrace was reported. The odor was from the washing machine’s electric motor. The unit was disconnected and the homeowner was advised to have the unit serviced.
Gas Leak Unfounded
On March 6, LFD was called to 7 White Oak Drive where a gas leak from the water heater was reported. Upon arrival, no readings were found and the gas was shut off to the unit. PSE&G was notified.
