Board of Education Votes to Approve “Open Campus” Lunch for 2024-25

Matthew Block presented his final report as superintendent of schools at the Livingston Public Schools Board of Education’s June 18 meeting. Matthew Block presented his final report as superintendent of schools at the Livingston Public Schools Board of Education’s June 18 meeting. He discussed open campus lunch, a policy that allows for juniors and seniors to leave campus for lunch. This policy was implemented during the COVID pandemic, when social distancing was promoted. Each year since the policy’s inception, the incoming senior class has asked the Board for permission to continue this program.

Representing the incoming senior class, president Vineeth Kanpa, vice president Jasmine Wang, and the Board’s new student representative, Darcy Bialick, addressed the Board. In asking for the extension, the three cited very long cafeteria lines and lack of seating. They also noted that there have been few instances of seniors abusing the off-campus lunch policy.

Following their presentation, the Board unanimously voted to extend the privileges to juniors and seniors for the 2024-25 school year. Board member Seth Cohen noted that while he supports the idea, he does not see it as a permanent solution to some of the issues the trio presented.

Cricket Pitch

Blocknext shared an update about the ongoing process of adding a cricket pitch to one of the district’s fields. He noted that when a cricket pitch is on a field, it becomes challenging to schedule other sports on that field and make the best use of the space.

The Sports Council has also shared some additional concerns about its addition, so Block noted that while it is taking longer than anticipated, “it is still happening.”

Personnel Changes

As of the end of the school year this week, Block is stepping down as superintendent of the Livingston Public Schools. A resolution recognizing his time as superintendent was read in full by Assemblywoman Rosaura Bagolie during the meeting. Board president Pam Chirls then presented Block with a gift from the Board.

Incoming senior Darcy Bialick was also formally sworn in as the Board’s new student representative. She is filling the vacancy left by graduating senior Jake Ferrans.

Anthony Rosamilia, a social studies teacher within the Livingston Public School systems who is retiring after more than 20 years, addressed the Board. He thanked the various staff members and colleagues he has worked with and recognized as both a teacher and the Livingston Education Association’s president. Block presented Rosamilia with a gift on behalf of the Board.

“We appreciate your words and your partnership,” Chirls said.

The district’s new business administrator and board secretary, Jessica Rapp, was welcomed and officially approved by the Board to serve from August 19 through June 30, 2025. She is replacing Thomas Lambe.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Board member Jenissa Arnette announced she would not be seeking re-election to the Board.
