Ed Chedister Celebrates 50 Years With LFD

Ed Chedister recently celebrated his 50th year serving with the Livingston Fire Department (LFD).

“It’s unbelievable and amazing that it’s been 50 years,” he said.

Chedister was initially hired by Fire Chief Charles Schilling in 1974, who he described as being “like a second father. He was one of the greatest chiefs ever.” He has also worked under chiefs Craig Dufford and Chris Mullin.

Throughout his 50 years of service, Chedister has assisted the fire department in a wide variety of experiences, including storm related incidents, motor vehicle accidents, and house fires.

“There was a mid-air plane crash in town (in 1982),” he recalled. “That was a unique experience.”

Chedister also has experience working on the First Aid Squad and as a supervisor for Livingston’s Water and Sewer Department.

These days, he serves with Ladder (Continued on Page A-6) der Truck Company 1, working under Captain Peter Holub and Lieutenant Tim Foley. During his tenure, Chedister also served as lieutenant and captain many times.

“I met many firefighters over the years who really became life-long friends. Everyone really sticks together,” he said. “I’ve had very unique experiences as a volunteer. It’s a great thing to do.”

Chedister also wanted to acknowledge his wife, Kyle, for standing by his side and supporting him.

“I couldn’t have done it without her,” he said.
