Edith Florence Bissett Young entered into her heavenly home on July 10, 2024.
A Celebration of Life service for Edith was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 16, in the Presbyterian Church of Livingston.
Miss Young died at the age of 91 at her home in Livingston.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on May 2, 1933, she was the daughter of Mary MacKay Young and Peter Bissett Young. She grew up in Orange, New Jersey, and moved to Livingston in 1962. Edith graduated from Orange High School in 1951 and was graduated from Montclair State University in 1955 with degrees in English and Biology.
Edith was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Livingston, and an ordained Elder, and church treasurer for many years and on the Finance Committee. She worked diligently on many church activities, including the very successful Bazaar ever year.
As a youth, she was very active in athletics and competed on the Newark Athletic Swimming Team, traveling around the country in various competitions.
Edith was a certified scuba diver, diving in Bermuda and many other islands. She loved traveling with her mother and with her sister. They made many trips to Scotland to visit relatives and friends. With her friend, Betty, they traveled to Scotland, Ireland, England,Alaska, and the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador.
She was a member of the Livingston Badminton Club and also bowled for many years with the Livingston Ladies Bowling Club.
She played softball with the Livingston Recreation Department and was a member of Oakleaf Senior Women’s Club, AARP Chapter 3663, Thursday Seniors, and Livingston Historical Society. She also volunteered to do the SHIPprogram for the Township of Livingston.
She taught school for a number of years. She also worked for the Girl Scouts ofAmerica in Montclair as their Financial Manager, until the time of her retirement in 1998. Edith was a Lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. and a scout for over 80 years and very active in scouting. On May 28, Edith received her 80th year pin as a Girl Scout at a ceremony at the Livingston Town Hall. During the summer, she spent many years at the Girl Scout Camp on Eagle Island in Saranac, New York. She worked as the Water Front Director for many years.
In 1998 Edith was awarded the “Thanks Badge” from the Girl Scouts, the highest adult award in Girl Scouting.
Edith was predeceased by her beloved parents, Peter and Mary Young, and her sister, Catherine MacDonald Young. She leaves to grieve her passing and will be greatly missed by her best friend, Betty Weber and Betty’s family; her dear friend, Sheena McClay; her neighbor for 62 years, Charles Jordan; her kind and devoted caregiver, Shana Duncan; fellow members of the Presbyterian Church of Livingston; her many Livingston friends; and extended family in Scotland.
