Candles In Oven, Stuck Ring Among Fire Department Calls

The Livingston Fire Department (LFD) responded to a number of calls this past week, including fallen branches andservicewires, a cooking fire, a ring stuck on a resident’s hand, and multiple alarm transmissions.

Mutual Aid

On Wednesday, August 7, LFD received a request for a fire engine to assist the East Hanover Fire Department with a basement fire.

Wires Down

A tree branch fell into primary wires outside of 33 South Livingston Avenue on Wednesday, August 7. PSE&G was notified and responded.

Two primary service wires were hanging approximately ten inches above the curb line at 6 Blackstone Drive on Wednesday, August 7. There was no fire or arcing present. PSE&G was notified.

Gaseous Odors

The residents at 20 East Harrison Place reported a gaseous odor in the residence on Thursday, August 8. Upon arrival, LFD found no odor present, and their meters found no gas readings. The homeowners were advised.

LFD received a report on Monday, August 12, of a gaseous odor in the roadway near the intersection of Countryside Drive and Bonnyview Drive. When investigating, LFD found no gas readings or odors. PSE&G was notified.

Electrical Fire

An electrical fire was reported at 7 Byron Place on Sunday, August 11. The fire was extinguished prior to LFD’s arrival.

Upon investigation, a shorted out phone charger was found. There was damage to the charger, power strip, rug, and blanket.

Removal of Stuck Ring

On Thursday, August 8, LFD was called to assist the homeowner at 3107 Pointe Gate Drive with removing a ring from her left hand, after (Continued on Page A-6) previously breaking two fingers the week before. The ring was removed using dishwashing liquid and by removing the bandages.

Cooking Fire

The homeowners at 65 North Livingston Avenue reported a cooking fire on Thursday, August 8. Upon arrival, firefighters found candles in the oven along with food. The candles had melted in the oven, which caused wax to fall on the food. The residence was ventilated using the fire department’s fans.

Alarm Transmissions

The fire alarm at 343 East Cedar Street was activated on Wednesday, August 7. The fire detector in the home’s attic was activated in error, and silenced. Later that day, a fire alarm in the home’s storage room was activated due to a malfunction.

Burned food caused the fire alarm at 48 West Northfield Road to be activated on Wednesday, August 7.

On Thursday, August 8, the fire alarm at 3106 Pointe Gate Drive was activated due to a low battery. The homeowner was advised.

That same Thursday, the fire alarm at 4000 Pointe Gate Drive was transmitted as a result of a power outage in the area.

The fire alarm at 3 Scarsdale Drive was also activated on Thursday, August 8. The homeowner had reset the system prior to the LFD’s arrival.

The smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were activated in the basement of 35 Laurel Avenue on Thursday, August 8. Upon arrival, LFD found no gas readings with its meters.

On Friday, August 9, the hard wired interconnected smoke detectors were activated at 49 Overlook Road. The activation was due to a faulty detector on the residence’s second floor. The unit was disconnected and the homeowner was advised to replace the old detectors.

A gas alarm was transmitted from 82 Chestnut Street on Friday,August 9. While the LFD found no gas readings, the alarm company was also on the scene, working on the system.

A fire alarm was activated as a result of smoke coming from a lawn mower at 360 East Northfield Road on Saturday, August 10.

On Sunday, August 11, the fire alarm at the Barnes and Noble located in the Livingston Mall was activated. LFD checked the building from the exterior, and no signs of fire were present.

The fire alarm at 91 South Orange Avenue was also activated this past Sunday because of a system malfunction.
