Fire Department Extinguishes Car Fire on Rt. 280

The Livingston Fire Department (LFD) responded to a number of calls this past week, including for a vehicle on fire and two mulch fires.

Vehicle Fire

On Monday, October 14, the Fire Deparmtent responded to a car fire on the eastbound side of Route 280.

Upon arrival, the LFD found the engine compartment of a Toyota Camry was fully engulfed in flames.

The fire was extuniguished and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Mulch Fires

Mulch was smoldering in the front parking lot at 184 South Livingston Avenue on Friday, October 11. The fire had been caused by a disgarded cigarette. The area was wet down.

On Saturday, October 12, mulch was reported on fire at the rear of 12 Goodhart Drive. The mulch fire melted a piece of the home’s siding. Firefighters successfully wet down the area and extinguished the flames.

Gas Line Struck

On Friday, October 11, a contractor excavating the driveway at 40 Wychwood Road struck the gas line; the gas was believed to have been off. Upon arrival, firefighters found no leak. The LFD notified Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G), which responded to the scene.

Water Transmission

Due to a malfunction, the water flow transmission alarm was activated at the residence at 670 South  Orange Avenue on Friday, October 11. Firefighters were unable to reset the system, but the caretaker of the building was on the scene to handle the situation.

On Sunday, October 13, the fire and water alarms were activated at Care-One, located at 68 Passaic Avenue. Upon investigation, water was found coming inside from the parking lot’s overhang. The system was drained, power to the alarm system was disconnected, and the alarm company was notified.

False Alarms

The LFD also responded to a number of false alarms.

The fire alarm on the third floor of 156 East Cedar Street, Cedar Street Commons, was activated on Thursday, October 10, as a result of plastic falling onto an electric burner in an apartment. The residence was ventilated and the properly manager was advised.

The fire alarm at 480 South Livingston Avenue was activated as a reult of a contractor working at the residence on Thursday, October 10.

St. Philomena Church’s fire alarm was activated on Friday, October 11. Upon investigation, the LFD found no flames and the system was reset.

Also on Friday October 11, the fire alarm at 227 West Mt. Pleasant Avenue was activated as the result of a lawn mower being used near an open door to the residence’s basement. The area was ventilated and the system was reset.
