The Livingston Fire Department (LFD) responded to a number of calls, including multiple vehicle fires, this past week.
Vehicle Fires
On Tuesday, October 15, the LFD receivedareport of a potential vehicle fire in the garage at 3 7 Wilson Terrace. Upon firefighters ’ arrival, the vehicle was found in the driveway with a fire in its engine compartment. The fire was extinguished and the vehicle’s battery was removed. Upon removal of the battery, the vehicle was towed from the scene.
A vehicle collided with a tree in the westbound lane of Route 280 on Wednesday, October 16. The collision resulted in a brush fire. While there was damage to the car’s undercarriage, the fire was extinguished. The vehicle was towed from the scene, and the RoselandFire Department was on the scene.
Later that same day, the LFD received a call reporting a vehicle fire near JFK Parkway and South Orange Avenue. Upon firefighters’ arrival, the area was checked and a small brush fire was found. The area was then wet down by the Millbum Fire Department.
On Friday, October 18, the LFD received a report of a vehicle fire on Route 280 East, near mile marker 5.5. Upon arrival, firefighters found the vehicle fully enveloped in flames. The fire was extinguished, with the Roseland Fire Department on the scene.
Smoky Conditions
The LFD received a call about smoke in the area near 311 Hillside Avenue on Thursday, October 17. After investigating, firefighters traced the smoke to a nearby fire pit.
Firefighters were called about smoke coming from 236 West Mt. Pleasant Avenue on Sunday, October 20. The smoke was found to be coming from a rear deck, which was wet down by the LFD.
Gas
The residents at 92 Belmont Drive reported a gas odor on Sunday, October 20. The LFD checked the premises and no carbon monoxide was found. Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) was notified and responded.
The LFD receiveda call about a gas leak at 2 Canoe Brook Road on Sunday, October 20. The department’s gas meter registered a gas reading of five percent in the residence’s catch basin. PSE&G was notified and responding.
False Alarms
The LFD received a fire alarm transmission from 45 Virginia Avenue on Tuesday, October 15. Upon arrival, fire officials discovered a heat detector in the residence’s garage had (Continued on Page A-6) been activated due to leaking water. The detector was removed and the homeowner was advised.
The fire alarm in the gym at St. Philomena’s Church was activated on Wednesday, October 16. The alarm company was notified to repair the unit.
On Friday, October 18, the fire alarm at 42 Rockledge Drive was activated due to burned food. The system was silenced prior to the LFD’s arrival.
Firefighters received a water flow alarm transmission from 120 Dorsa Avenue on Friday, October 18. Upon arrival, the LFD found the alarm company on the scene, working on the system.
A fire alarm at Livingston High School was activated as the result of a water main break at the Oval on Sunday, October 20.
