Amidrecent reports of unidentified drones spotted in New Jersey skies, Friendship Circle and Chabad at Short Hills utilized drone technology to create an extraordinary holiday event. More than 2,200 people joined the celebration of Chanukah that illuminated the skies at LifeTown in Livingston. The light show used 150 drones to depict Chanukah-themed designs against the night sky.
The event, held on Wednesday, December 25, the first night of Chanukah, showcased the story of the holiday. The show was produced by Lightyear Drone, a Florida-based company specializing in drone light displays.
Accompanied by festive music, the crowd watched as drones formed images of menorahs, dreidels, Judah the Maccabee, and more. Each design was choreographed to synchronize with music, creating a multi-sensory experience.
“It is so important to find creative ways to excite the children about their heritage,” said Rabbi Zalman Grossbaum, CEO of Friendship Circle and LifeTown. “The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, always encouraged the use of technology as a tool to engage and inspire.”
Despite the chilly December evening, hundreds of families gathered, bundled up in warm coats and scarves as they awaited the show.
The evening began with a traditional Menorah lighting ceremony, featuring a giant Menorah created by local artist Yitzchok Moully.
Children enjoyed hot latkes and jelly donuts, traditional foods of the holiday. The event also included a fire-juggling show and a Chanukah gelt drop.
The drone show was met with resounding applause, and many attendees shared that the event was a memorable highlight of Chanukah.
Sandra Levy remarked, “Seeing the joy on my children’s faces as they watched the drones light up the sky was priceless. It’s a beautiful way to connect with our heritage and community.”
Rabbi Mendel Solomon of Chabad at Short Hills, expressed how the collaboration with the Friendship Circle brought a unique vibrancy to the Chanukah festivities. “This is a celebration of light andhope that goes beyond tradition,” he said. “Especially with everything going on this year, we wanted to create something (Continued on Page A-6) that brings people together from all walks of life to celebrate Chanukah’s universal message.”
“This event not only celebrated Chanukah, but also demonstrated the transformative power of innovation and collaboration, Rabbi Solomon continued. “As the lights from the drones faded into the night, they left behind a glowing reminder of the miracle of Chanukah and the importance of coming together to celebrate life and hope.”
