Fire Department Responds to Calls

The Livingston Fire Department responded to a number of calls this past week, including a motor vehicle accident and a transformer on fire.

Motor Vehicle Accident

The LFD was called about a motor vehicle accident near 172 South Livingston Avenue on Monday, January 13. Upon arrival, the firefighters found the vehicle hadhit a utility pole, bringing down live wires. The area was taped off. Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) was notified and responding.

Transformer Fire

On Tuesday, January 14, at 10 a.m., the LFD responded to West Mt. Pleasant Avenue, in front of Bottle King, for a report of a transformer on fire. LFD remained on standby until the electric company arrived.

Gas Main Break

On Friday, January 10, representatives from PSE&G drilled through the gas main at 321 South Livingston Avenue. PSE&G called to shut down the gas line.

Reports of Gas Odors

Agas odor was reported in an apartment at 200 Latham Court on Friday, January 10. Upon arrival, the LFD checked the premises with its gas meters, but no readings were found.

A gas odor was reported at 66 Okner Parkway on Friday, January 10. Upon investigation, the LFD discovered the odor was coming from a leaky valve. PSE&G responded.

On Monday, January 13, a resident reported a smoky odor at 7 Windsor Drive. Upon the LFD’s arrival, the homeowner reported an odor of natural gas, not smoke. Firefighters found that the residence’s water heater was leaking. Both gas and water were turned off at the heater, and the homeowner was notified.

Alarm Transmissions

An elevator alarm was activated at 66 West Mt. Pleasant Avenue on Thursday, January 9. Upon arrival, the unit was checked andno problem was found.

The carbon monoxide alarm was activated at 16 Winchester Road on (Continued on Page A-6) Thursday, January 9. It was discovered that the alarm was activated due to the detector needing to be replaced.

PSE&G reported carbon monoxide conditions at 73 Walnut Street on Friday, January 10. Upon arrival, the LFD found the homeowner had already ventilated the residence. PSE&G discovered there were issues with the hot water heater’s chimney vents and the home’s new furnace. Firefighters checked the residence with the department’s gas meters, and no readings of carbon monoxide were found.
