Photographer Don Schwartz gathered highlights of many Livingston High School (LHS) sports teams at the end of their winter seasons. The following is a compilation of the athletes’strongest games and accomplishments, according to Schwartz.
JV Boys’ Basketball
The junior varsity boys’ basketball team finished the season with a record of 19 and 1. The season highlights included their winning streak in the Super Essex Conference games and the Championship of the Whitey Dukiet Holiday Basketball Classic.
Freshman Boys’ Basketball
The team ran off six consecutive wins to finish its season with a final record of 18-5. The Lancers went 11-0 in conference games and had overtime wins against West Orange, West Caldwell and Clifton. Offensively, the team scored over 50 points in ten of their last 13 and played their strongest team defense of the year over the final two weeks.
Varsity Girls’ Basketball
The squad was led by two sophomores: Jordyn Fersko averaged 4.7 points per game and Mia Viola averaged 4.7 rebounds per game.
Their first win of the season against Whippany Park in the Joe Pepe Holiday tournament was a high point. Three players scored in double digits during the contest and it was an overall balanced effort for the Lancers to pull out the 43-39 win against the Wildcats.
Another highlight of the season was Senior Night. The Lancers were able to honor their five seniors: Sophia Levitt, Alex Winitch, Helen Cheng, Avery Reiman, and Christine Belcuore. This night also brought the team a 21-18 win over Kittatinny. Winitch led that effort with her career high seven points and seven rebounds.
JV Girls’ Basketball
Junior varsity girls played a 15 game season, winning 11 and losing four. The highlights included 11 wins, and two tournament second place finishes at the Essex County Tournament and the Holiday Invitational Tournament.
Boys’ Fencing
The boys ended the season with an 8-5 record, finishing fifth in the NJSIAA State Team Tournament. The boys won the District 3 Team Champion title and placed first in sabre, second in epee, and third in foil. The boys also placed second overall and first in sabre at the Cetrulo Tournament. Senior sabre fencer Mark Shteyn finished the season with 24 wins and five losses. Junior sabre fencer Shaoren Zhu finished with 16 wins and four losses. Sophomore foil fencer Payton Gao finished with 15 wins and seven losses. Senior sabre fencer Eric Brekhman finished with 17 wins and nine losses.
Girls’ Fencing
The girls wrapped up with a 12-2 record, finishing second in the NJSIAA State Team Tournament. The girls won the District 3 Team Champion title along with first in sabre, first in foil and second in epee. The team also placed second overall and second in foil at the Santelli Tournament. Junior foil fencer Jasmine Chen finished fourth in foil at the NJSIAAState Individual Tournament and ended the season with 27 wins and five losses. Senior foil fencer Anusha Bansal wrapped the season with 27 wins and four losses. Sophomore sabre fencer Valentina Zheng finished with 22 wins and seven losses. Freshman epee fencer Kayla Fang ended with 26 wins and ten losses. Freshman sabre fencer Antara Nayak took 22 wins and ten losses.
Boys’ Swimming
The boys’ swimming team finished the season with an 8-4 record. The team placed fourth in the Super Essex Conference Championship; received a qualification into the State Tournament; and set two school records: Ting Lee in the 100 breaststroke and Lucas Swee in the 100 freestyle.
Girls’ Swimming
The girls, however, finished with a 7-5 record. Season highlights included: a victory in the State Tournament and an eighth place finish in the Super Essex Conference Championships. The Lancers were led by captains Cori Holtzman, Morgan Korn and Sasha Lukonen.
Varsity Cheerleaders
The varsity cheerleaders performed at each of the varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball home games. The squad also participated in four competitions, taking home first place in all but one, where they placed second.
