During the conference meeting of the Livingston Township Council, held on Monday, March 13, members discussedhonoringthetown’s former clerk at an upcoming meeting and heard a proposal from the families of township LGBTQ students.
Clerk To Be Honored
A reception will be held for former township clerk Glenn Turtletaub at 7 p.m. prior to the start of the regular Council meeting on March 27. Refreshments will be served.
Following the reception, Turtletaub will be honored during the meeting, which will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Turtletaub retired last year after 32 years working in Livingston, including over 20 years as town clerk. He still resides in town.
LGBTQ Flags
Parents of several LGBTQ students, with the support of the Shiv’s Third Eye organization, asked the Council for additional support during June’s Pride Month. Currently, during the month of June, the town flies a Pride flag in front of Town Hall and supports a Pride picnic.
The parents asked the Council what public spaces in town that they can place Pride signs and banners in June. Placing them around the Oval was one specific request. The purpose of the signs would be to show additional support and affirmation to the LGBTQ community in town, which parents said can make a significant difference in the lives of those in the LGBTQ community.
While the Council members noted that they supported the cause, they said they could not approve any ribbons and signs. This is because if they were permitted, it might result in the town being forced to permit a hateful group to do the same.
Mayor Michael Vieira said he would work with the group to find an additional way to support the LGBTQ community prior to June.
The Council also directed the group to speak with the Board of Education about putting signs up on school properties, which they said they planned to do.
