The Livingston community sadly lost longtime resident and supporter, Richard J. Turi who passed peacefully on Thursday August 10, 2023, surrounded by family. He was 88 years old.

Mr. Turi grew up in the historic Forest Hill section of Newark. Upon graduation from Newark Academy, he attended Princeton University where he graduated in 1956. He began his career as an expert stone mason by joining the family business, Pellecchia Construction Co. shortly after. During that time, Mr. Turi helped to build many schools and commercial buildings throughout New Jersey.

In 1965, Mr. Turi purchased property and built his own home in Livingston. He soon founded Champion Construction Co. and for the next 47 years, he helped local area residents beautify their properties with walks, steps, patios, and custom masonry projects. The quality of his work was unsurpassed, and it sustained his business for over four decades.

As his three children grew, Mr. Turi also became active in the Livingston National Little League, where he would coach championship teams and would later serve as president of the organization. He also volunteered his time as president of the Livingston Big “L” Club, chairman of the Livingston Memorial Day Parade committee and served on the committee to erect a veteran’s memorial to honor the men and women who served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Mr. Turi enjoyed creative endeavors such as painting, sketching, writing and custom carpentry. He was also fond of playing piano and the Big Band music he grew up listening to. His family and many friends came to love his quick wit and sense of humor.

One of his favorite places to spend time was his family home in Belmar, NJ. There, his children, niece and nephews fondly recall gathering around the dinner table and hearing his stories of growing up in Newark and his exploits at Princeton. These moments will be treasured memories and a comfort to those closest to him.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lorraine H. Turi of Livingston; his daughter, Karen M. Turi-Korakis and her husband, Tommy Korakis; his daughter, Linda L. Turi; and his son, Danton G. Turi. He also leaves behind his two loving grandchildren, who will always remember how “Papa” made their childhood magical.

Per his wishes, there will be no services at this time.
