It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Captain (Ret.) Frederick Friedman Sr., M.D. (87 years old) while at his home in Livingston, New Jersey, on August 16, 2024. Dr. Friedman (Fred) was born to Frances and David Friedman (both predeceased) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 26, 1937. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Pennsylvania and later the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, where he received his medical degree and specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. Early in his career, he was a captain in the U.S. Air Force, where he served as Chief of Obstetrics at Otis Air Force Base in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Following his service, Dr. Friedman developed a robust medical practice in Brooklyn and Manhattan, delivering thousands

of babies and helping to care for countless women’s medical needs. He was a patriot and later in life served as chapter leadership for several organizations, including the Jewish War Veterans,American Legion, the Old Guard, and AARP.

He was deeply committed to his profession and causes, as well as enjoyed good food (especially chocolate), opera, doo-wop, westerns, slapstick comedies, and spy novels. Paramount to his career and interests was his dedication to his family, in which he took great pride. He was married to Marian Mullen, the late Sondra Sue “Sandy” Friedman (decd.1985), and the late Frances Wolf Friedman (decd. 2020). Dr. Friedman leaves behind a wonderful legacy, foremost of which is his family. He is survived by his children, Meg Lepisto, Dr. Frederick “Ricky” Friedman Jr. (Dana Rauch), Douglas Friedman (Fidelia), Jill Porat (Amir Porat), Peter Newman (predeceased), Danielle Friedman (Benjamin Straub), Hope Newman (Larry Magaram), and David Friedman (Lana). He is also survived by grandchildren, Samuel, Joshua (Erin), Eric, Jake, Laura, Becky, Jessie, Sara, Ben, Talia, Izzy, Sebastian, Alessondra, and Ryan. He is also survived by his great-grandson, Shane, as well as many extended family and friends.

Family, friends, and other guests were invited to the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home, located at 145 E. Mount Pleasant Avenue in Livingston, New Jersey, on Wednesday August 21, 2024, to reminisce and honor the life of Dr. Fred Friedman. He will be laid to rest at Brigadier General William Doyle Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown Borough, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans or Jewish War Veterans.
