Robert James Auble

Robert James Auble

Robert James Auble died at home after a courageous seven year battle with PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy). He peacefully passed away the evening of Monday, December 9, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Born and raised in Ithaca, New York, he was the son of the late George Andrew Auble and the late Camilla (DiGiacomo) Auble. He was brother to the late Paul, George, Sandy (Kostelnik), Jeffrey, and RobinAuble, and brother to the surviving David, Dawn, Sally (Whitney), Terry, Roy, and Susan (Rogers) Auble.

He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1963. He attended Ithaca College, where he was a member of Delta Kappa fraternity and was co-captain of the Men’s Wrestling Team. He married his college sweetheart, Louise (Reiber) Auble, who also graduated from Ithaca College.

Upon graduation, Bob began a 41 year career as a physical education teacher and coach in the New Providence, New Jersey school system. Bob coached several different sports at New Providence High School – most notably girl’s Varsity Soccer and boy’s Wrestling. While continuing to teach in New Providence, he also coached Varsity Wrestling in Summit, New Jersey. Eventually, he became the head wrestling coach at Upsala College, and, subsequently, the head wrestling coach at Rutgers, Newark. After retiring from college level coaching, Bob was asked to come back to high school coaching in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, where he built a very successful wrestling program, and where he was named conference “Coach of the Year.” Bob was a member of IBEW #241 and worked summers as a union electrician. ALivingston resident for over 40 years, Bob was an active member of the Livingston Elks. Having held all the offices of the order, he was the Exalted Ruler for two consecutive years. Bob was then elected to the office of New Jersey State Vice President, representing the Northwest District.

He was known for his reserved demeanor paired with his dry sense of humor. With his unexpected, witty one liners and anecdotes, he could send an entire crowd into hysterics.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; his daughter, Larissa (Burgoyne); his son in law Steven; his grandson, Jack; his aforementioned siblings; and his many nieces and nephews. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather (“BaBa”), uncle, and friend who will be missed very much.
