Michael’s Musings

If our family can manage to avoid the onslaught of preschool-related illnesses long enough, I think that I’m in for one of the best holiday seasons of my life. My boys are now three-and-a-half years old, the perfect age to experience what makes the holidays such a special time.

The Township Council will make appointments to Livingston’s many advisory committees at the annual organizational meeting on New Year’s Day, and now is the time to apply. The Council hopes to attract new residents – and those who have not previously been active in the community – to serve on any of its many committees.

Welcome to the Tribune
Welcome to the Tribune

While the West Essex Tribune’s regular readership will not notice many changes to this week’s issue, some are picking up our paper for the first time. This week’s edition is a TMC (Total Market Coverage) issue, the last of four newspapers this year that we send to every home in Livingston.

Veterans Day Events

Tomorrow, Friday, November 10, there will be a Veterans Day luncheon held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Livingston Senior Community Center. There will also be a ceremony held in memory of the late Murray Sklar, a Marine Corps veteran of the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, at Temple Beth Shalom at 11 a.m. on Sunday, November 12. We encourage the community to attend these meaningful events and thank our local veterans who have served. We extend our gratitude to our veterans for supporting us, and we should all do what we can to return the favor.

Development and Trees

The overdevelopment of Livingston in recent years has become an unavoidable topic of discussion. As more and more construction commences in town, or is proposed to be built, it directly affects a greater number of residents. This includes some people that had no idea they even had anything to be concerned about before a builder took a look at a nearby property and decided they wanted to do more with it.

School Board Election
School Board Election

Election Day is next Tuesday, November 7, and this year’s ballot features two worthy candidates – Fang Gong and Harsh Raju – vying for one open seat on Livingston’s Board of Education. We thank both of these candidates for their willingness to contribute to our community. As past and current members can attest, being part of the Board of Education necessitates a huge time commitment and is a major responsibility. Board members help to shape our town. It can also be quite the thankless job, at times, so we are grateful to see two residents step up to make a difference in Livingston. Both stay-at-home parents who have children in the district’s elementary schools, we applaud Raju and Gong for their willingness to commit themselves to this position.
