Livingston Police ovcers performed school safety training at Heritage Middle School last week, April 3 through 7, while students and faculty were ou for spring break.

The varsity softball team opened its season against Nutley last Monday, April 3. The Lancers defeated Nutley, 11-1, in .ve innings for its .rst victory of the season, and went on to defeat Montclair, as well.

The campus that previously held St. Peter's Episcopal Church until November of 2021 will soon be home to the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, according to an announcement from Bishop Carlye Hughes and diocesan trustees.

Livingston's .rst 2023 Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding Event will be held on Saturday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Livingston Senior/Community Center, 204 Hillside Avenue. "This is a great event that ouers residents drive-through service to safely dispose of their unwanted electronics and to have their con.dential papers shredded," Livingston Mayor Michael Vieira said.

In response to a ban on gas powered leaf blowers that will commence May through September in South Orange starting next month, the Council discussed the prospects of a similar ordinance in Livingston during its conference meeting on Monday, April 10. The Council had previously discussed this matter 16 months earlier, and determined at that time that they would not consider an ordinance until the town's own Department of Public Works employees were using electric equipment. DPW director Chris Southworth said that doing so was not viable for the department at the moment. Several landscapers were present at Monday's meeting to oppose a ban, but they and the Council were in agreement on continuing to permit gas powered equipment. Fred Kalweit of Fred's Small Engine Repair in town noted that electric blowers are "not ready for the prime time season." He said that they are too expensive, have a low runtime on batteries, and the sound diuerence is minimal compared to gas powered equipment. He also noted that the duration of the work would take longer, so the sound (the reason for the South Orange ordinance) would be greater with electric equipment. Council member Shawn Klein reiterated that until the DPW says they can use electric equipment, the town should not ask commercial businesses to do the same.

Catherine Mignone passed away on March 30, 2023. She was 88 years old. Born in Orange, New Jersey, Catherine was a long-time resident of Livingston, NJ. She was a graduate of Upsala College and received her BA and MA. She taught in Orange and Livingston, New Jersey, for many years. When she started her career as a student teacher, she met the love of her life at Lincoln Ave. School in Orange.
