One hundred students attended the first annual Social Justice Read-In and Coffeehouse, abbreviated SJRI, on April 12, sponsored by the Livingston High School chapter of the National English Honor Society (NEHS).

On Thursday, April 18, the Livingston Fire Department responded to a two-car accident in front of 127 South Livingston Avenue. The wreck occurred between West Cedar Street and Wilson Terrace, less than a block from the Fire Department’s headquarters building.

During the public comment portion of the Wednesday, April 10, meeting of the Township Council, members of the public discussed increases in crime, flying the Israeli flag, and the town’s shooting range.

LITTLE LEAGUE SEASON BEGINS:

The Livingston Lancer softball team celebrated several accomplishments in recent weeks. The team played three games, including two against SEC American division opponents. The Lancers defeated Hanover Park, 14-0, on Wednesday; Columbia, 5-2 on Thursday; and lost to Mt. St. Dominic, 4-3, on Monday.

Several car burglaries were reported Monday evening in Livingston, and four minors were arrested in connection with the crimes that same evening, Livingston Police said.

Gloria Frances Szumaski (née Luciano) of Lavallette, formerly of Livingston, died on Tuesday, April 9. She was 82 years old. She was born on July 30, 1941 and raised in Livingston.

The chess team at Livingston High School recently finished in first place for the second consecutive year in the New Jersey High School Chess Championship. Representatives from the team travelled to Baltimore, Maryland for the national High School Chess Championship.

This past week, the Livingston F ire Department made two trips to provide mutual aid to the East Hanover Fire Department. LFD also responded to a single call about a gaseous odor at a residence and multiple smoke alarm activations.

GIRLS’ FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM DEFEATS

Alberto Pietrobon, 91, died on Wednesday, March 27, in Livingston. Born in Riese Pio X Treviso, Italy, he immigrated to the United States in 1956. He moved to West Orange in 1961. In 1963, Mr. Pietrobon opened his business, JoPell Home Improvements, where he worked until his retirement.
